Anna Bergman Kraus, a cherished mother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on July 1, 2026, just shy of her 97th birthday. Born on July 4, 1929, in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Anna was the beloved daughter of Franz and Margaretha Bergman, who instilled in her a love for family, the importance of self sufficiency, perseverance, and a zest for life that she carried throughout her years. Her parents immigrated from southern Russia and established themselves in the German Mennonite community in Canada as farmers.
Anna's early life was enriched by the companionship of her siblings. She was predeceased by her sisters Elly Lepp, Selma Scharf, Mary Friesen, and brothers Otto, Ernest, Frank, and Paul Bergman. She is survived by her devoted brothers Erwin and George Bergman, who hold dear the memories of their shared childhood experiences.
In 1949 Annie immigrated with her family to the California Central Valley. She was a vital part of the household and supported the family farm. Several years later she was proud to obtain US citizenship along with other family members.
Anna's professional life began in healthcare, having attended school to become a licensed vocational nurse. She worked at Fresno County General Hospital, California, where her compassionate nature and caring spirit touched the lives of many, until she chose to dedicate herself fully to her family.
In March of 1968, Anna's life took a joyful turn when she married Charles Kraus in California. Their marriage began with a European honeymoon with cherished moments in France and Italy. Anna devoted herself to her family in the suburbs of Los Angeles, becoming a homemaker and the proud mother of her daughter, Cathy Kraus, who was the light of her life. In retirement, Anna and Charles transformed their love for home arts into a delightful home business, crafting exquisite miniature cakes and furniture for dollhouses. Their creations, celebrated for their quality, authenticity, and intricacy, were a testament to Anna's meticulous attention to detail and she became known as ‘The Cake Lady’. They became fixtures at craft fairs, known not only for their artistry but for their warmth and friendship.
Anna's passions extended beyond crafting to gardening, sewing and knitting where she proudly shared her fiber arts with others. Her travels with Charles were a source of joy and inspiration, and she was always eager to hear tales of others' adventures, her excellent memory weaving their stories into the fabric of her own experiences. Known affectionately as "Annie" to those who loved her, Anna's cheerful disposition and
signature laugh were as much a part of her as her kindness and thoughtfulness. She delighted in family gatherings, celebrating each birthday with a heartfelt card or a phone call, ensuring those she loved felt remembered and cherished.
Anna is reunited in peace with her beloved husband Charles and their family who have gone before her. Her legacy of love, laughter, and creativity lives on through her daughter Cathy, her brothers, and the many nieces and nephews who were blessed to know her. Anna Bergman Kraus will be dearly missed, yet her memory will forever remain a guiding light for those fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in peace, her spirit soaring with the love and joy she so freely gave to all.
